Government announcement will encourage campaign to press on to abolition of charges- Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha

19 November, 2014

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha who represents the Beaumont/Donaghmede Electoral area which has one of the most active campaigns against the water charges has said the Government's announcement today will not quell the protests.

He said:

"People in this area and, I believe, all over the country are not going to fold up their placards and go home as this Government wishes. The campaign is against the water charges and it will go on until the charges are gone. The Government has accompanied its package today with an effort to demonise the campaign, trying to scare people off the streets. It hopes to divide us between 'reasonable' people who it hopes will accept the charges and 'unreasonable' people who will not. The reality us that masses of reasonable people have protested peacefully and will continue to do so until the charges are abolished. This evening at 7.30pm in Clare Hall the community will be holding a protest meeting. The campaign goes on."
