Need to respond to cycle consultation
Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has called on people to engage with the cycling strategy consultation currently underway.
Mr McAleer a member of the Regional Development Committee said,
“Not only is cycling a healthy option but it is also environmentally friendly and cost effective way of transport and there is a need to promote it.
“The consultation is looking for ways to improve cycling infrastructure and safety in order to give people the confidence to take to the bike, both in urban and rural areas.
“At present there is only 800 miles designated as the National Cycle Network, 700 miles of which is shared by cars. It is important that we start to implement more cycle only routes.
“Sinn Féin support that recommendation of looking at innovative ways such as transformed disused railway network as cycle paths and that all future A-class roads have a cycle provision built into them and that cycle safety be incorporated into major junctions.
“I am however concerned that the consultation is only paying lip service to the rural provision in any future cycle strategy and we are anxious that rural areas gets equal treatment to their urban counterparts.
“Sinn Féin have already submitted our own response and i would appeal to everyone who has an interest in cycling to respond to the consultation before November 21st by contacting [email protected] or telephoning 02890540179 to speak to Ann Burke of the DRD Cycling Unit.”
