Colreavy calls Irish Water announcement a desperate attempt to cling on to power

20 November, 2014 - by Michael Colreavy TD

Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin TD for Sligo/North Leitrim, has called the recent announcements by government on Irish Water a PR stunt.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Colreavy said:

“Despite all the huffing and puffing from those sitting on the government benches, some hard facts remain.

“The government is pressing ahead with charging domestic households for water.

“The water metering programme will continue unabated.

“These announcements are a desperate attempt to cling on to power.

“Fine Gael and Labour are frightened of hitting the doorsteps while the spectre of Irish Water hangs over them.

“They have clearly realised from the past number of weeks that the massive mood of the country has turned against them, especially on this issue.

“Irish Water has already soaked up a massive amount of public funding.

“€80 million was paid to consultants to advise Irish Water.

“It wouldn’t be unfair to state that they must be amongst the worst advisors in the history of advising, exemplified by the mess Irish Water has made.

“Major credit must go to the Right2Water campaign for organising for hundreds of thousands of people to take to the streets around the country demanding the water charges be scrapped.

“They tackled the blatant arrogance displayed by this government in believing that they could impose this unfair charge on the people of this country, and that they would quietly consent to it.”
