Dalriada Hospital campaign has shaken Northern Trust – McKay

24 November, 2014

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said the campaign to save Dalriada hospital has shaken the Northern Trust. He added that the community in Ballycastle will not accept the Trust’s agenda to withdraw services from rural areas.

He said:

"The campaign to save Dalriada Hospital has been fantastic and the scale of it has shaken the Northern Trust and the health minister Jim Wells.

"The challenge for this community is to maintain this momentum and energy until we get an assurance that the Dalriada will remain open.

“I have no doubt the people here will meet that challenge. The strength and unity of this community has been resolute since the Northern Trust descended on the town with its proposal to shut down these services.

"We expect a decision from the health minister early this week.

“He has delayed making a decision for long enough while the Health Trust has moved ahead running down of the hospital.

“The minister must keep this hospital open, immediately allow patients to be admitted again and resolve the long-running problem of MS sufferers deliberately not being referred to the Dalriada.

"Rural communities like this are not second class, and it is about time the Northern Trust realised we will not accept their agenda to withdraw services from rural areas."
