Sinn Féin welcome reinstatement of Minor Works Grant and call on Minister to protect it in future budgets

26 November, 2014 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Speaking from Leinster House today, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien welcomed the reintroduction of the Minor Works Grant and said that the Minister must now reinstate previous cuts to schools capitation funds.

 The Cork North Central TD said;

“Sinn Féin has consistently called for the reinstatement of the Minor Works Grant given its necessity for helping schools stay open so we welcome the fact that the Minister has chosen to take this on board.

“However, the fact remains that this funding allocation comes after a year of no Minor Works Grant and consecutive years of cuts to capitation funding, so schools are operating from a very disadvantaged position.

“Further to this, the Minister has failed to guarantee that the Minor Works Grant will be in place for 2015/2016.

“This funding is for the most basic of running costs associated with schools, and principals, teachers, parents and students should not be faced with the threat of this funding being withdrawn again or cut next year.”
