Villiers failing to meet her government’s responsibilities

26 November, 2014 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd said today it’s bit rich for the British Secretary of State to say the chances of a deal are slim given her government’s failure to live up to its responsibilities and her own partisan pro-unionist approach to the process.

John O’Dowd said:

“Theresa Villiers and the British government are responsible for many of the difficulties we are attempting to address in this negotiation.

“Her government has stripped billions from our budget, creating enormous pressures on our core public services.

“David Cameron’s government refused to support the Haass proposals which were accepted by Sinn Féin, the SDLP and the Alliance party.  They have encouraged unionist intransigence by promoting a partisan pro-unionist agenda.

“The British government has refused to honour its commitment to hold an inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane while the British state continues to obstruct and frustrate all efforts to get to the truth around state-sponsored killings.

“There are still huge challenges to be dealt with but we approach all of positively with a view to finding resolutions.”
