Government ignoring the people and pressing ahead with water charges

29 November, 2014 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has said the government is ignoring the people as it presses ahed with its introduction of water charges.

Speaking as protests against water charges took place across the state Teachta McDonald repeated her party leader’s call for a general election.

Mary Lou McDonald TD said,

“This weekend citizens from all communities came out on the streets to protest against water charges.  The people know that once introduced, these charges will only increase.  As we have done in the north, Sinn Féin in government is committed to ending these charges.

“The government has made clear that it is pressing ahead to introduce these charges which many families simply cannot afford to pay.

“Instead of listening to the people, government ministers have hid behind spin, scare and smear. Our citizens see through promises made by parties that set them aside in government.

“This is a government that has lost the support of the people. This is a government that is frightened of the will of the people.

“If this government is confident in its actions, if this government believes that the people are on their side, then let them go to the people and let the people decide.“
