Dublin City Sinn Féin Councillors look for answers on water charges and housing

1 December, 2014

Dublin Sinn Féin housing spokesperson and chair of Dublin City Council (DCC) housing SPC Cllr Criona Ní Dhálaigh has said her party will continue to look for answers from DCC on how the water charges will impact on DCC tenants.

Speaking today Cllr Ní Dhálaigh said:

“ The fact of the matter is that Dublin City council tenants are still in the dark about how water charges will impact them and their tenancies. For example will Dublin City Council be forwarding on data relating to the tenants to Irish Water?

Will Dublin City Council be acting as debt collectors on behalf of Irish Water and will it be chasing tenants for payment of this charge? These questions all need a comprehensive answer and we will continue to press on the issue.

The city manager has stated that as there is no legislation available yet on this issue on DCC is unable to comment. This ongoing uncertainty is making tenants increasingly uneasy.

Furthermore tonight during Lord Mayor’s business, I called on Minister Alan Kelly to immediately re schedule the meeting he cancelled with a  cross party delegation of city councillors that was set to discuss the government’s social housing strategy.

A comprehensive and realistic strategy is needed now, not by 2020, to tackle the ongoing housing crisis in this city.
