Government must listen to McVerry and deal with homelessness – Cullinane
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane has called on the government to intervene in the housing crisis and to introduce emergency measures to deal with homelessness.
Speaking in the Seanad in the wake of the tragic death of Jonathan Corry, Senator Cullinane said:
“It is shocking to think that in 2014 people are dying on the streets of our capital city.
“The fact that this man was sleeping in a doorway just feet away from Leinster House is a dreadful indictment of the failure of this government’s housing policy.
“We know homelessness is on the increase and that growing numbers of people are sleeping rough in towns and cities across Ireland.
“The government should heed the repeated calls from long-time campaigners like Peter McVerry, the Simon Community and Focus Ireland and act without delay.
“A state that cannot house its own people and that lacks compassion for the most vulnerable in society is by any measure a failed state.”
