Young people with disabilities must be able to access Youth Guarantee Work Schemes- Lynn Boylan MEP
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has once again called on the Tánaiste Joan Burton to amend the youth guarantee to enable young people with disabilities to access the scheme.
Speaking today, the International Day of People with
Disability, Ms Boylan said that defending the rights of people with
disabilities has been and will remain a top priority for the GUE/NGL group in
“We urge the European institutions to make sure that the EU meets its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Furthermore I urge this government and Minister Burton to review the implementation of the Youth Guarantee as young people on disability allowance are not provided with the same access to education and training opportunities as those on jobseekers payments.
In Ireland alone, approx. 600,000 people, 13% of the population, has a disability. Dublin has the fourth highest rate of disability. The funding cuts made to disability and care-focused groups last summer by this government hasn’t helped and as result people with disabilities are deprived of leading an independent life, a basic right of every human being as stated by the UN in 2006.”
