O’Brien calls on Minister to lift preconditions to teacher talks and produce the evidence to back her claims
Speaking following this week’s teachers’ strike, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien called on Minister Jan O’Sullivan to drop her preconditions for talks with teachers in order to resolve this dispute.
The Cork North Central TD said:
“I welcome the fact that the Minister is willing to discuss this dispute with the teachers.
“However, placing preconditions on the unions before they even enter the room is not helpful to anybody.
“It is certainly no incentive to engage with the Minister on the matter.
“The TUI and the ASTI have made their position very clear on the matter of internal assessment and the Minister cannot railroad through this policy without their cooperation.
“They have very real concerns about this and deserve to have the Minister listen to them.
“The Minister also said that she has evidence to back up her claims regarding internal assessment, and I have called on her repeatedly to produce this.
“I am further calling on the Minister to lift her preconditions on talks with the unions in order to move past this impasse.”
