Self-referral physiotherapy service needs reinstated

4 December, 2014 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has called for a pilot self-referral physiotherapy service to be reopened and extended.

 Speaking after a pilot scheme to enable people to refer themselves to physiotherapists in the South Eastern Trust area was cancelled, Ms McLaughlin said;

 "Earlier this year the then health minister, Edwin Poots, announced that a self-referral physiotherapy service would be available in the South Eastern Trust area from April.

 "At that time he also said that plans were in place for the roll out of the service to other areas by March 2015.

 "However, it now appears that his successor, Jim Wells has abandoned those plans.

 "I am disappointed and concerned at this move as the benefits of the self referral scheme are well known to all those involved.

 "The decision not to proceed with the self referral scheme runs contrary to the times and objectives of Transforming Your Care.

 "I will be raising this matter directly with the heath minister and asking him to reconsider his decision.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
