All-island abuse inquiry must meet needs of all victims – McGuinness
Sinn Féin MLA Martin McGuinness has said an all-Ireland inquiry into sexual abuse during the conflict must include all sections of society.
Speaking after a meeting of the North South Ministerial Council in Armagh today, Mr McGuinness said;
"Sinn Féin has proposed a victim-centred approach to this matter that will provide support to victims, access to the judicial system and ensure community safety.
"I have twice written to the Taoiseach with these proposals and the Irish government has yet to respond to my repeated requests for a meeting to discuss this matter. We raised this matter again at the NSMC plenary and the Irish government failed to respond.
"Instead they are intent on pursuing a highly selective agenda that will not address the needs of all victims of abuse who did not or could not access support services or the criminal justice system at the time of the conflict and were let down by the state, and by all republican and loyalists groupings.
“Sinn Féin will support and work to develop a process that meets the needs of all victims."
