Cllr Chris Curran calls for council to begin writing off some council rent arrears

8 December, 2014

Sinn Féin Councillor Chris Curran said tonight that he was shocked by the extent of rent arrears in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown county council area.

Cllr Curran said:

“The arrears show over 50% (€3.6 million) of all council rents in arrears to some extent, over 86% (€3.2 million) of the rent amounts due is 4 months or over.

The figures show clearly that council tenants are being squeezed, just like homeowners and that councils across the country should examine their accounts with a view to writing off uncollectable debts.

The precedent exists where lenders assisted mortgages holders with their mortgage arrears in some cases writing off part of the mortgage arrears, perhaps the same treatment can be shown to council tenants.

There's little doubt that rent arrears have the same stressful effects as those endured by mortgage holders.”
