Landlords threaten to cut off water supply if tenants do not register with Irish Water
Sinn Féin TD for North Kerry said today that the more sinister consequences of charging for water are being exposed already.
Deputy Ferris said:
“I already have constituents telling me that they are being threatened by landlords that if they do not register with Irish Water and pay water charges, they will have the water supply to their homes cut off.
“I don’t remember Minister Kelly telling people that this was one of the consequences of his actions when claimed he had fixed this Irish Water mess.
“The fact that people could be threatened with losing the roof over their heads, either due to political opposition to water charges or through not having the money to pay water charges, is a serious development.
“Not only does it heap more pressure on families, but it threatens democracy too. “What kind of government allows this kind of pressure to be put on people who are already struggling to pay rising rents? We heard the Fine Gael-Labour TDs today in the Dáil singing their own praises, but tomorrow the people on the streets of Dublin will be singing a different tune.”
