Lynn Boylan MEP co-hosts conference on Roma Rights
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has hosted, in conjunction with the European Roma Rights Centre, a conference on the situation of the Romani in the EU.
Speaking after the meeting Ms. Boylan said:
“The conference today focussed on the issues and problems Roma groups endure and face across both Western Europe and Central and Eastern European member states. On a daily basis the Roma people encounter segregation and discrimination. They struggle with sub-standard housing and forced evictions, and suffer numerous health inequalities.
I was shocked to hear some of the personal stories from the Romani people I met with. One issue of particular concern was the continuing segregation of Romani people from the rest of society sometimes in horrendous conditions. In one example, they were segregated in a camp which was a chemical waste dump. Segregation camps are a fundamental violation of human rights and the existence of such camps within the EU should not be tolerated.
Situations such as the example mentioned above all contribute to the increasing isolation of the Romani. It prevents the Romani from integrating while they are simultaneously being the ones blamed for not integrating into society more.
I gained some valuable insights today into the lives and daily discrimination suffered by the Romani people”.
