Brian Stanley TD urges Government to listen to voice of the people on Water Charges
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Environment, Brian Stanley TD, has called on the Government to listen to the voice of the people in relation to the water charges. The Laois Offaly TD was speaking as tens of thousands of people made their way from all parts of the country to take part in the biggest protest outside Leinster House since the hunger strikes in 1980 and 1981.
Deputy Stanley said: “Today will see tens of thousands of people gather outside to make their views known on the issue of water charges. It is clear that a huge number of people are remain opposed to water charge despite the Government having been forced into a major climb down by introducing lower flat rate payments
These charges represent a bridge too far after years of austerity that have drastically cut the incomes of a huge amount of Irish households.
“I would urge the Government to listen to what the voice of the people is telling them, and to introduce an amendment to the Water Services Bill, which they were afraid to debate today in the Dáil, to abolish the domestic charges.”
