Government Parties have two choices – abolish water charges or face annihilation – Carthy

Speaking after he attended the Right 2 Water Demonstration in Dublin yesterday (Wednesday), Sinn Fein MEP for the Midlands North West Constituency Matt Carthy stated that Government parties must listen to the desire of the people in relation to the water charges or face wipeout at the next election.

Carthy said:

“I would like to commend all those who turned out in huge numbers on a bitter winter’s day to send a clear message of their opposition to the water charges.

“The level of anger, frustration and sheer determination of the people on the streets of Dublin yesterday was evident.

“Many of those among the crowd were those who voted for Fine Gael and Labour in the last General Election, in the hopes of change and a new direction in Irish politics.

“They have been badly let down as the current coalition has pursued the same political agenda as the failed Fianna Fáil administration in an even more ruthless fashion.

“The people are sick of the spin and arrogance of this Government who fail to recognise that the Irish people have simply had enough.

“People are off their knees and they will not rest until they see the abolition of the water charges – the Government’s piecemeal reform of the legislation will not be enough to quell their rising anger.

“Government TDs and Senators have two choices – either scrap the water charges or face the anger of the public at the next general election.”
