Adams raised concerns over Redwood Care Facility with Minister for Health in July

13 December, 2014 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin Leader and Louth TD Gerry Adams raised the issue of conditions for citizens with intellectual disabilities at the Redwood Care facility in County Meath last July with the then Minister for Health James Reilly.

The Redwood Extended Care Facility in Stamullen has now been told by HIQA to ensure there are no new admissions until problems at the centre are addressed.

Gerry Adams said:
"In July I raised concerns with the then Minister for Health, James Reilly about the safety of people with intellectual disabilities at the Redwood facility.

"This followed very serious issues brought to my attention by Maeve Kennedy who reported that her brother Eamonn Kennedy’s mental and physical state had deteriorated in Redwood between January 2010 and April 2011.

“Eamonn Kennedy was admitted to hospital in Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda on two occasions with extensive bruising on his body. He subsequently spent five months in hospital before being moved to a different care facility.

“Maeve Kennedy documented her brother’s injuries, including taking photographs, and made a formal complaint. It took the HSE almost two and a half years to produce a report. The family believe the report fails to answer their key areas of concern, especially how he received his injuries.

“Following the shocking and disturbing revelations by the RTÉ Investigates programme regarding Áras Attracta, Thursday’s publication of a HIQA report on inspections carried out Redwood, further raises concerns about the safety of citizens in care facilities.

"On Wednesday I raised with the Taoiseach the fact that the safety of citizens with intellectual disabilities in HSE care centres could not be guaranteed and that the current system cannot be trusted.

“This new report confirms that situation and will be a cause of major worry to relatives of the clients at Redwood.

“I repeat the call I made on Wednesday for a fully Independent, root-and-branch inquiry into all care facilities for citizens with intellectual disabilities in the State."
