Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew meets Dungannon Taxi Drivers

1 November, 2004

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has meet with Dungannon Taxi Drivers who have been left in a crisis situation by the reluctance of the PSNI to give them information on a death threat.

Speaking after the meeting Ms Gildernew said:

"I have met with taxi drivers in Dungannon who have been put in an impossible situation by the PSNI. The PSNI have told them there is a threat to the life of a taxi driver in Dungannon but have not said which taxi driver has been threatened. They have also informed some taxi firms but not all of them of the threat which seems haphazard and unprofessional at best. They have also not said who the threat is coming from. In other words they have given the taxi drivers enough information to be afraid for their lives but not enough information to take steps to protect their lives."

"As a result of this the taxi drivers are having to take measures to protect themselves. The right to work is a basic human right and while the PSNI fail to supply additional information the taxi drivers must consider their options very carefully. I am fully behind the taxi drivers in whatever decision they make and have been in touch with the Secretary of State's Office regarding this matter." ENDS
