Seanad should stand with the people and reject water charges - Cullinane
The Sinn Féin leader in the Seanad, David Cullinane, has called on Senators to reject the Water Services Bill when it comes before House.
Speaking earlier today Senator Cullinane said:
“There has been a lot of debate about the Seanad its relevance to the general public.
“I believe it is relevant and that it has an important role to play in making our political system more accountable.
“The Water Services Bill, the legislation giving legal effect to the government’s water charges, gives Senators an opportunity to reject the further imposition of austerity on ordinary people.
“The Bill is expected in the Seanad in the coming days and it would be a great day for democracy if Senators voted against it.
“If the Seanad wants to be taken seriously it must do the right thing and not be merely a rubber stamp for the government’s brutal austerity policies.
“The Seanad should reject this bill and stand with the people.”
