McDonald welcomes Kenny’s commitment to talk to Draghi on Banking Inquiry participation
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed the Taoiseach’s commitment to ask ECB Leader Mario Draghi to attend and cooperate with the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry.
Deputy McDonald was speaking after raising the issue with An Taoiseach at Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil today.
“The ECB played a very direct role in the matters which the Banking Inquiry is examining.
“The reason the government continuously gave for not burning bondholders was that the ECB would not allow them to do this.
“The ECB’s snub to the Banking Inquiry is not just entirely unacceptable, it is a calculated insult.
“I welcome Enda Kenny’s commitment to ask Mario Draghi to reconsider his position on this issue even if he only did so while under sustained pressure in the Dáil chamber this afternoon.
“He shouldn’t have to be pushed into such a position. He should have been on the phone first thing this morning when news broke of the ECB decision and demanded that Mr Draghi appear before the inquiry.
“That type of approach would best represent the views of the Irish people on this issue and he as Taoiseach should always act in the interests of the Irish people.”
