Ní Riada ridicules Taoiseach's Dáil comments – Ní Riada
Speaking from Strasbourg today, Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada has criticised Taoiseach Enda Kenny for a remark he made during Leaders Questions, accusing Sinn Féin MEPs of being “very quiet over in Europe”.
Referring to her ranking of 15 out 751 MEPs she questioned the Taoiseach's knowledge of the work of Irish MEPs.
Ní Riada said:
“Only a week after former minister Brian Hayes accused us of doing too much work that he sees as “not wearing the green jersey”, the Taoiseach now says that Sinn Féin MEPs are too quiet over in Europe. I would question how much the Taoiseach knows of the work Irish MEPs are doing in Europe.
"Enda Kenny has always been keen to appease his European masters. Sinn Féin MEPs are there to critically engage with EU, which is what we were elected to do. Perhaps it is time he took a greater interest in the work Irish representatives do in the Parliament.
“Personally, I have had a good start to my European term. I am currently ranked 15th out of the 751 MEPs and I hope to keep up this strong pace in the New Year. It is hard to see where Enda Kenny is getting his information from because it is clearly at odds with reality.
"I would like to commend my part colleagues in Europe and I speak for all of us when I say that it is a privilege to be the only party to represent Ireland, north and south, on the European stage."
