Government deluding themselves - people cannot afford water charges - Ó Clochartaigh

18 December, 2014

Speaking during debate on the bill today to introduce water charges, Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh called on Senators to vote against the government.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“It is such a pity we are here today debating this flawed and broken piece of legislation.

“This is further evidence - not that we need anymore, that this government is a million miles from the everyday reality of life for the vast majority of ordinary people.

“These are the people who travelled from every corner of Ireland to stand outside Leinster House to protest the imposition of more austerity at the hands of this elitist government.

“The people have had enough but this government refuses to listen to them.

“Well, let me guarantee them and anyone who supports this legislation there will be a price to be paid for your indifference, at the next election.

“The plain people of Ireland are watching and they will not forget Irish Water or the damage caused by this Government‘s austerity policies, for a very long time.”
