Gildernew to meet with Inland Revenue over tax credit failure
Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh & South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has began compiling a dossier containing the details of constituents currently affected by the ongoing tax credit problems. Ms Gildernew will be meeting with the Inland Revenue next week to discuss the crisis.
Ms Gildernew said:
"At the moment a vast percentage of my time is spent dealing with tax credit issues. Literally hundreds of constituents have been placed in a difficult situation through no fault of their own. The computer system seems unable to cope and the safety nets that should help sort out problems have failed.
"In fact unresolved tax credit issues are dragging on for months on end. One of my constituents has spent more than £100 in telephone calls trying to have his problem sorted out. Another has spent over a year waiting for a form to be dealt with."
"Ordinary hard working people who have always been prudent in financial matters now find themselves facing large bills through no fault of their own because the wrong information has been entered into a computer system."
"The problem is that tax credit seems impossible for the ordinary person to work out - the system is not transparent and isn't working. For that reason I have decided to compile a dossier of the many outrageous cases which have been drawn to my attention.
" I will be meeting with Peter Guy of the Inland Revenue next week and would like any constituent who has had a problem with tax credit to contact one of the Sinn Féin offices in the constituency, at Enniskillen ( 7 Market Street, Ph 66328214 ), Lisnaskea ( 82 Main Street, ph 67723986 ) or Dungannon ( 60 Irish Street ), so I can make clear the depth of the problem."
