Minister should make reform of Direct Provision a key priority for 2015 - Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin’s Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the Minister for Justice Francis Fitzgerald to make reform of the Direct Provision her New Year priority.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“It is appalling to think that almost 4,000 people, a third of whom are children, have spent another Christmas in Direct Provision.
“These 1,500 children and their parents are facing into another year of uncertainty, stress and insecurity not knowing if and when they might be deported.
“This is inhumane and simply not good enough in a country which claims to uphold its human rights obligations.
“Minister Fitzgerald should make the reform and abolition of Direct Provision her key priority for 2015.
“She has a moral and political obligation to deal with the many issues raised by this system.
“It is clear the Working Group setup by the government has no real mandate to carry out the type of reform called for by the Irish Refugee Council and others.
“The ball is in the Minister’s court - she should do the right thing and make 2015 the year Ireland abolished this shameful system.”
