Eleven hour wait for ambulance not acceptable

6 January, 2015 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has welcomed the news that a full investigation will be held into why an elderly patient in the Glens waited eleven and a half hours for an ambulance.

 Mr McMullan said,

“It is totally unacceptable that anyone has to wait eleven and a half hours for an ambulance and I am calling on the Health Minister Jim Wells to ensure that it is never repeated.

“While I understand that this was not an emergency it was however a life threatening call and the anxiety of waiting for the ambulance only added to the stress suffered by the patient.

“Although The Glens are outside the ambulance service time because of their geographical position the people living there deserve a reasonable response time

“I have been in touch to the ambulance service and welcome the fact that they have acknowledged the incident was so serious that they are to carry out a full investigation.

“I look forward to a comprehensive review of response times in the Glens area and the implementation of any recommendations that come from this investigation.”
