Sinn Féin raised concerns with Minister on use of children's PPS numbers – O’Brien
Speaking following concerns raised around the holding of PPS numbers of students, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O'Brien today called on the Minister to review this policy and ensure that the collection of information is reasonable and proportionate.
The Cork North Central TD said:
"Many people have raised concerns about the necessity of collecting students PPS numbers and holding them until they are 30 and these concerns are completely reasonable.
"Sinn Féin have had concerns around the information collected by schools on the Department's behalf and have questioned the Minister on this over the last few months.
"Clearly Minister Jan O'Sullivan's explanation of the retention of data for this length of time is not satisfactory.
"Any information collected and retained must be reasonable and proportionate.
"I completely agree that we must track student development but that does not necessarily mean collecting and holding PPS numbers for thirty years.
