Cappagh waiting lists out of control due to short staffing - Ellis

8 January, 2015 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis has called on the Minister for Health to supply sufficient support to Cappagh hospital so that they can open a currently closed operating theatre. He made his comments in light of reports that some patients in need of urgent hip replacement surgeries are having to wait as long as 15 months for an appointment while one of the hospitals theatre lies idle due to short staffing.

Deputy Ellis continued;

"This is simply unacceptable. We have people waiting over a year in agony with serious limitations on their capacity to live comfortably and independently due to this short staffing. Many of these patients have already waited extended periods in their current conditions and are now being told they will have to wait as much as 15 months from their referral date.

This is not the fault of the doctors or nurses who are working tirelessly to give the best service possible to their patients. This is the fault of a government which has presided over years of cuts to health care.

I am calling on the Minister for Health to meet with hospital management immediately in order to arrange for the opening of the idle theatre in Cappagh hospital so that we can have some hope of waiting times lowering in the future. At present the situation is unacceptable and many people are living very limited and painful lives due to these delays caused by under staffing and under funding."
