Ellis expresses sadness at latest death of a homeless man on Dublin's streets

9 January, 2015 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has said he is saddened to hear of the death of a homeless man in Dublin city last night. The man in his 50's was discovered on Cows Lane in Dublin city centre this morning close to the headquarters of the Homeless Executive in the Civic Offices building.

Deputy Ellis said more needed to be done to ensure that everyone is protected from this kind of tragedy with proper provision of housing, adequate emergency accommodation and protection for tenants.

He said;

“The man who died on the streets of Dublin last night had been working and paying rent until he became a victim of the economic collapse and was made homeless. He was a victim of the failure of this state to protect people from the terrible scourge of homelessness.

“I am truly saddened to hear of his passing.  He had not sought emergency accommodation and there were places available but this man had already been failed when he was forced into homelessness. Those working in the emergency accommodation services are clear that many people would rather sleep on the street than face the problems that come with the shelters for those in danger of rough sleeping.

“More beds have been put in place recently and this is welcome but we need to protect people from ever needing emergency accommodation by ensuring that vulnerable tenants do not face eviction and rent levels are kept under control. The government has failed to take decisive action on this.

“We also need to ensure through a major house building investment that those who need emergency accommodation today have a hope of being housed in the future. Despite government claims this is not in place and there is no sign the government intends to act on this.”

“My thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones. I would also ask that everyone keeps an eye out for people sleeping rough and help to keep services informed of their whereabouts so they can provide support.”
