EU Constitution is not a charter for an EU of equals - Mary Lou McDonald
Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Mary Lou McDonald has this evening said that the "EU Constitution is not a charter for an EU of equals - it is a charter for inequality". Ms McDonald was speaking prior to taking part in a debate at UCD this evening around the EU Constitution.
The debate entitled "That this house would back the new EU constitution" has been organised by the Literary and Historical Society at UCD. Other speakers include representatives from Fine Gael and the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).
Ms McDonald said:
"The formal signing of the EU Constitution in Rome last week represents a critical turning point in the history of the European project. The EU Constitution has been portrayed merely as a consolidation and simplification of existing treaties. However it is much more than that. The EU Constitution makes fundamental changes in the structures of the EU, it gives those structures more power. It gives the EU a single legal personality for the first time, it shifts the balance of power further from member states and towards an EU super-state.
"Sinn Féin is concerned with the current and future direction of the EU. The EU Constitution is not a charter for an EU of equals - it is a charter for inequality. Sinn Féin welcomes the opportunity to widen out the debate on the EU Constitution and engage with other political parties and the student body.
"Sinn Féin offers a progressive and radical vision of the European Union which is a true partnership of equal states, co-operating in social and economic development in Europe and beyond. This is the EU that Sinn Féin will continue to relentlessly pursue." ENDS
