Lynn Boylan expresses disappointment at weak EU GM text
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP, Lynn Boylan today expressed her disappointment after a weak legislative text was passed on GMOs in the European Parliament.
"This agreement was meant to legally secure the right for countries to opt-out of GMO cultivation on their territory. Unfortunately however, we have ended up with a watered-down text with does not offer the requisite legal certainty for Member States.
'Poll after poll shows that EU citizens are extremely and justly wary of GM products - for countries who want to ban their cultivation it was essential to have a watertight document with no room for legal challenges.
"This, I believe, has not been achieved today. Democratically-elected governments should have the power to make such decisions with important ramifications for health, the environment and agriculture without the possibility of legal challenges from biotech companies looming over them.'
