Investment needed in community care in Glens area - McMullan

13 January, 2015 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said the health minister is failing rural communities in the Glens area.

The East Antrim MLA said;

"The whole focus of the Transforming Your Care health strategy is a shift towards community and palliative care.

"While that is to be welcomed, alongside adequately resourced primary care facilities, it is important the needs of rural communities in particular are taken into account.

"The policy needs to be properly funded to ensure rural communities have access to palliative and community care.

"It needs to be rural proofed to make sure the unique needs of the Glens are is taken into account.

"So far that has not happened and, worse than that, the minister also tried to close facilities at the Dalriada hospital before he was forced to reconsider the decision after a successful public campaign.

"Communities in rural areas such as the Glens have also had to endure unacceptable delays waiting for ambulances to arrive to transport them to facilities outside the area because of the lack of community and palliative care locally.

"If the health minister is serious about implementing the Transforming Your Care policy he needs to invest in community and palliative care in the Glens area.”
