Call for retired officers to cooperate with Ombudsman inquiries welcome – Kelly

13 January, 2015 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin representative Gerry Kelly MLA has welcomed Police Ombudsman, Dr Michael Maguire's call for retired police officers to be compelled to cooperate with investigations being carried out by his office.

Gerry Kelly said:

“I welcome and endorse the opinion of the Ombudsman, Dr Michael Maguire that retired police officers should be compelled to cooperate with his investigations.

“There can be no doubt that the refusal of retired police officers to cooperate in investigations is a major obstacle to the resolution of legacy cases and achieving justice for families.

“Refusal to cooperate by retired officers only adds to the belief of many families that the British state colluded in the deaths of their loved ones.

“Retired officers should cooperate with these investigations and if they refuse to do so they should be compelled to give evidence and produce all relevant documentation in their possession pertinent to the investigation.”
