Cllr Reilly welcomes the roll out of the Garda text alert scheme in Ballymun and Glasnevin

14 January, 2015

Local Sinn Féin councillor Noeleen Reilly has welcomed the roll out of the Garda text alert scheme in Ballymun and Glasnevin.

She said’ I have been pushing the text alert scheme for a while now.  The scheme was originally piloted in the Santry and Beaumont area and has been very effective in the prevention of crime and public order offences.  It is a modern day approach to crime prevention.  The system enables the Gardaí to communicate effectively with Residents Associations and community leaders who can then pass this information to the wider community.  So I welcome the announcement from an Garda Síochána that the scheme is being rolled out in Ballymun and Glasnevin.’

An Garda Síochána will provide information by text or e-mail to each registered “Community Contact” and they, in turn will forward the information by text or e-mail to all members of their “Community Group”. “Text Alert” is a one way communications system. There will not be any facility to reply to the “Text Alert” system. Contact with the Gardaí must be made in person or by a telephone call, to control and verify information.

She further added ‘More often than not burglaries can occur in clusters, so if a member of the public contacts the Gardaí about a particular incident, this information will then be verified and an email/text will be sent out for further circulation.   Every week I am contacted by someone who has had their property broken into.  It is one of the most intrusive things than can happen to a person.  I think the operation of the Text Alert scheme would certainly make people feel safer in their homes’.
