Sinn Féin Continue To Campaign For Full Broadband Provision To Rural Communities

18 January, 2015 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon said that it was essential that the lack of Broadband accessibility to rural communities was highlighted on a regular basis until all rural homes and businesses had access to the essential technology.

 Ms. Fearon said,

"Access to good quality broadband in rural areas is now an essential basic service that assists both householders in everyday life and helps rural businesses to grow, develop and prosper.

“While initiatives like the investment of £5 million towards the provision of rural broadband announced by Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill will help address the problem more needs to be done.

“My colleague Cathal Boylan has met with BT to discuss tackling ‘Not Spots’ across Newry and Armagh district and to look at the current roll out of work by the telecommunications company.

“I have also written to Minister of Enterprise Trade and Development Arlene Foster for an update on the current scheme of works to improve and extend rural broadband.

"It is important that we continue to scrutinise broadband roll out to ensure that all rural communities get access to the fastest broadband available so rural dwellers can use technology to develop their communities in the same way as urban dwellers.”
