Illegal dumping a huge cost to the city – Cllr Reilly
Dublin City Councillor Noeleen Reilly has expressed alarm at the huge costs involved in the removal and disposal of illegal dumping. The council have estimated the annual cost at €669,676.42.
‘It is a pity to see the city’s resources being used to clear up illegally dumped waste. There wouldn’t be a day that goes by where I have to contact the council about clearing bags from the Whitehall and Ballymun area. Some days I could report as much as five or six incidents. It is such a waste of resources which could be used elsewhere. We all know where the black spots are and it is a real pity to see the appearance of some areas being destroyed by illegal dumping. It was a huge mistake for the council to privatise the bins and it was a further mistake to take away the bin waiver from low income families.
The council in some areas are now calling door to door and residents will need to provide evidence of how their waste is disposed of. I would hope that this would lead to an improvement as it is not sustainable for the city to be incurring these costs every year when we have other services that need funding. ’
