Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and his party colleague Matt Carthy MEP are to seek an urgent meeting with the President of NUIG to voice their concerns over equality issues in the university.

The Sinn Féin politicians met with SIPTU representatives in the college last week, who outlined their case for an independent external review of all aspects of the university’s activities.

According to Ó Clochartaigh and Carthy:

‘The union members from the SIPTU Academic Section who we met made a compelling case that the university authorities have questions to answer in relation to what they call ‘the elimination of all facets of structural discrimination within the institution’ and that this should be done by an independent expert’.

‘The recent Equality Tribunal finding in the Sheehy Skeffinton and Demspsey cases has focussed attention on equality issues in a broader context in the university. The issues being raised relate not only to academic staff, but those in other sections, regardless of gender or employment status.

‘The union representatives we met with feel that the practice of discrimination is widespread and may not be confined to NUIG alone. They say a culture of fear has emerged where people have been afraid to speak out on these issues due to concerns around adverse treatment from their managers and the authorities.

‘SIPTU are calling for the full implementation of the recent Equality Tribunal findings, the engagement of external independent experts to review all aspects of the University’s activities, that staff be allowed to give evidence and that SIPTU agree with the selection of the expert and that steps be taken to deal with this issue at a national level.

‘It is ironic that NUIG has an academic reputation for its work in the area of international human rights and that very serious questions are being raised around its own work practices in relation to fundamental rights.

‘We are seeking a meeting with the President of the University, Jim Browne, so that we can raise these concerns with him and put the case to him that for satisfactory resolution the authorities need to take on board the practical and genuine recommendations that the unions are making.’

Caithfidh Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh seasamh le cearta oibrithe – Carthy & Ó Clochartaigh

Tá Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh agus a chomhleacaí an Feisire Eorpach Matt Carthy ag lorg cruinniú ar bhin práinne le Uachtarán Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh leis an imní atá orthu maidir le cearta cothromaíochta san ollscoil.

Chas polaiteoirí Shinn Féin le baill de SIPTU san gcoláiste an tseachtain seo caite, a léirigh an cás atá acu maidir le h-athbhreithniú seachtrach neamhspleách ar ghnéithe do ghníomhaíochtaí na hollscoile.

Dar le Ó Clochartaigh agus Carthy:

‘Chuir na h-ionadaithe ceardchumainn ar chas muid leo ó Rannóg Acadúil SIPTU cás cuimsitheach ós ár gcomhair, go bhfuil ceisteanna le freagairt ag údaráis na hollscoile i dtaca leis an rud ar a dtugann siadsan ‘deireadh a chuir le chuile ghné de leithcheal struchtúrtha san institiúid’ agus an gá atá ann le saineolaí neamhspleách chun seo a scrúdú.

‘Tá na rialaithe le déanaí ag an mBinse Cothromaíochta i gcásanna Sheehy Skeffinton agus Demspsey tar éis fócas nua a chuir ar an gcomhthéacs níos ginearálta san ollscoil. Baineann na ceisteanna atá dhá ardú ní amháin leis an bhfoireann acadúil ach le daoine i ranna eile, beag beann ar inscne agus stádas fostaíochta.

‘Braitheann na h-ionadaithe ceardchumainn ar chas muidne leo go bhfuil cleachtas na h-éagcothromaiochta forleathan agus nach mbaineann sé le Ollscoil na hÉireann amháin fiú. Deir siad go bhfuil cultúr faitíos tagtha chun cinn agus go bhfuil drogall dá bharr ar dhaoine labhairt amach ar eagla go gcaithfeadh bainisteoirí nó na h-údaráis ar an gcaoi chéanna leo féin.

‘Tá SIPTU ag iarraidh go gcuirfí moltaí an Bhinse Cothromaíochta i bhfeidhm ina iomláine, go dtabharfaí saineolaí neamhspleách seachtrach isteach le scrúdú a dhéanamh ar gach gné d’obair na hollscoile, go mbeadh deis ag fostaithe fianaise a chur ar fail don duine sin, go n-aontófaí le SIPTU an té atá le roghnú don obair agus go dtógfar céimeanna le dul i ngleic leis an bhfadhb ag leibhéal náisiúnta.

‘Tá sé iorónach go bhfuil cáil acadúil idirnáisiúnta ar an ollscoil seo maidir lena cuid oibre go h-idirnáisiúnta i réimse na gcearta daonna agus go bhfuil ceisteanna tromchúiseacha dhá n-ardú anois maidir lena cleachtais inmheánach oibre féin I dtaca le cearta bunúsacha.

‘Tá muid ag lorg cruinniú ar bhonn práinne le hUachtarán na hOllscoile, Jim Browne, le gur féidir linn an imní atá léirithe linn a chur in iúl agus cur ina luí air chomh tábhachtach is atá sé go dtógfaí moltaí praiticiúla agus stuama na gceardchumainn ar bord.’
