Disruption to water supply hitting rural areas hard – McAleer

19 January, 2015 - by Declan McAleer

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has said disruption to water supplies is having a particularly adverse impact on rural areas.

Speaking after the water supply to hundreds of homes in the mid-Tyrone area was disrupted, Mr McAleer said;

"The Loughmacrory water works shut down in Saturday afternoon and left around 1,300 homes without supply.

"I was in continuous contact with NI Water over the weekend to ensure residents were kept up to date with the latest information.

"The impact of the disruption to supply was particularly keenly felt in rural areas and was compounded by the wintry weather conditions.

"I hope that the ongoing negotiations to find a solution to the current dispute ensure that people living in rural communities are not further isolated as a result of the disruption to supply.

"I will be raising this issue at the regional development committee.”

Local Councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald said;

"Given the inclement weather conditions and the fact that many of the rural roads were blocked with snow we arranged to get a temporary water supply brought in.

"Along with the Red Cross and local volunteers we brought bottled water to dozens of vulnerable people who were effectively trapped in their homes.

 "We went to the doors of pensioners, people with restricted mobility and other medical conditions to deliver water." ENDS/CRÍOCH
