Ó Broin welcomes Balgaddy Child and Family Centre announcement
Sinn Féin Councillor Eoin Ó Broin has today welcomed the announcement today by the Government that it intends to provide funding for the Balgaddy Child and Family Centre. This announcement comes after a sustained campaign by the Centre and local community to have the funding for the centre mainstreamed.
Cllr Ó Broin said:
‘I want to welcome the announcement by the Minister today. However it is important that the total amount of funding awarded is at the level at which the centre is currently operating.
‘Sinn Féin has raised this matter directly with the Minister on a number of occasions most recently on the 14th of this year. I understand that a number of constructive engagements between the Centre and the Department took place, the most recent on January 19th.
‘Balgaddy is an area with a very large youth population. It also has a high level of social need.
‘The Child and Family Centre has a valuable role to play in meeting the needs of the communities of Foxdene, Meile an Ri, Tor an Ri and Buirg an Ri. Mainstream government funding is essential if it is to continue serving the local community.
‘Today's announcement by the Minister is good news for the local community. However Balgaddy needs a significant increase in investment in community facilities particularly for older teenagers. Sinn Féin will be raising this with the Minister in the time ahead.’
