Tragedy averted thanks to quick action of Short Strand residents - Ó Donnghaile

21 January, 2015

Sinn Féin Councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile has condemned those responsible for leaving a viable pipe bomb device in the Pottinger's Quay Housing Complex last night. Cllr Ó Donnghaile said that it was only down to the quick action of some of the tenants there that tragedy was averted.

Speaking after being on the ground with residents who were evacuated last night Ó Donnghaile said;

"In the first instance this incident has to be condemned outright. It caused scores of families to be evacuated and disrupted into the early hours.

"We are extremely lucky that we aren't dealing with a much more serious tragedy given this devices proximity to a number of gas pipes as well as the fact that the ground floor of this complex houses the Waterbabies Childcare facility. Those responsible have shown little regard for the safety and welfare of so many people.

"It is imperative now that the PSNI act urgently to apprehend those responsible and anyone with information brings it forward. Those responsible for this belong in jail."
