McAleer welcomes payment to farmers in disadvantaged areas
Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has welcomed the decision by agriculture minister Michelle O'Neill to make a one-year transition payment to around 7,000 farmers in disadvantaged areas.
The West Tyrone MLA said;
"Farmers in Disadvantaged Areas (DA) have received Less Favoured Area Compensatory Allowance payments since the 1980s, however, under the new EU CAP policy they will no longer be eligible.
"In terms of claiming this payment, farmers should note that the department has set an application deadline of 13th March 2015 and a flat rate payment of £14.40 per hectare.
"Payment will be based on the determined DA land in the 2014/15 LFACA application year.
"While the phasing out of LFA payments will be disappointing for DA farmers, particularly in the current economic climate, it is hoped that this one-year transition payment will help reduce the impact by giving farmers additional time to adjust."
