Sinn Féin MEPs to present Comhaltas with European Citizen’s prize – Ní Riada
Speaking in Brussels this morning, Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland’s South constituency Liadh Ní Riada detailed plans for a special award ceremony to present the European Citizen’s prize to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.
Liadh Ní Riada said:
“I am delighted that my colleagues in the European Parliament accepted Sinn Féin’s nomination of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for this prestigious award, and I am looking forward to meeting with musicians and volunteers from all over Ireland at a special ceremony this Saturday in Brú Ború, Co. Tipperary."
“The European Citizen’s Prize is awarded annually by the European Parliament to individuals or groups that have displayed an outstanding commitment to promoting better mutual understanding and closer integration between citizens."
“Together with my fellow Sinn Féin MEPs Martina Anderson, Lynn Boylan and Matt Carthy, I was happy to nominate Comhaltas for their track record in promoting our traditional music and safeguarding our heritage for future generations. The role played by local branches and by volunteers ensures that Comhaltas is part of the community, and will continue to go from strength to strength for generations to come."
“The hosting of the Fleadh Cheoil in Derry in 2013 marked an important milestone in the peace process and is another reason why we nominated Comhaltas."
“Sinn Féin are organising an award ceremony in conjunction with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland. The event will take place on Saturday in the stunning Brú Ború cultural centre at the foot of the iconic Rock of Cashel.”
