Adams congratulates Patricia King

21 January, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has congratulated Siptu vice President Patricia King on her appointment as the new general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU).

Gerry Adams said:

“I want to congratulate Patricia King on her appointment to the hugely important post of general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU).

“Patricia King has a long record of effective leadership within the trade union movement. She comes into her new role in ICTU at a difficult time for workers and a particularly challenging time for the trade union movement in Ireland.

“The austerity policies of the Fine Gael/Labour government have hurt working families and forced many workers to emigrate in search of work. The range of stealth taxes over recent years, including the tax on the family home and the imposition of water charges are seriously hurting low and middle income families and the disadvantaged.

“ICTU is a vital voice for workers and carries much of the burden of defending workers’ rights and entitlements. I look forward to meeting Patricia King and strengthening the good working relationship between Sinn Féin and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.”
