Access to records will help families - Hazzard

22 January, 2015 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed an initiative from culture minister Carál Ní Chuilín to make it easier for families to access conflict-related court and inquest records.

The South Down MLA said;

"This initiative by Carál Ní Chuilín to simplify the process of applying for records held by the Public Record Office (PRONI) will be welcomed by families.

"This information includes conflict-related court cases and inquest records.

"Until now the only way this information could be released was by making a Freedom of Information request. Now they can simply email or write to PRONI asking for the records they require.

"To get access to the records families will be asked to sign an undertaking agreeing not to publish the information they contain.

"This will hopefully help families access information that could assist them in their search or truth and justice."
