Findings of penalty points report are disturbing – Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD

23 January, 2015 - by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has said the findings of the report into the abuse of the penalty points system, reported by RTÉ, are disturbing.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn said had it not been for the actions of Maurice McCabe, the abuse of the penalty points system would be continuing unbeknownst to the general public.

Speaking today Deputy Mac Lochlainn said;

“The findings of this report are disturbing.  That some gardaí including senior officers continued to abuse the penalty point system is beyond belief considering the numerous reports on this issue, the sustained media coverage of it and the statements from the then acting Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan.

“The fact is that this practice would be continuing unbeknownst to the general public had it not been for the actions of Garda whistle-blower Maurice McCabe.

“Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan has an obligation to pursue disciplinary action against those who have been found to be abusing the system.”

 He continued:

“I have vigorously pursued the implementation of the Garda Inspectorate Report on penalty points from March 2014.  It is my belief that the recommendations of this report must be implemented in full in order to root out this practice once and for all.

“I have recently received assurances from Minister Frances Fitzgerald and from the Garda Inspectorate that those recommendations will be implemented and that a Criminal Justice Working Group has been established for that purpose.”
