RTÉ should remain free from commercial and political interests – Colreavy TD
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has welcomed the new chairpersons of RTÉ and BAI who appeared before the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications today. However, deputy Colreavy highlighted the need for the public broadcaster to remain free of interference both commercial and political.
Speaking during the committee meeting, Deputy Colreavy said:
“RTÉ, as the state’s public broadcaster, have a duty to remain free of interference from both commercial interests and government.
“It is the role of the board of RTÉ to insure that no interference occurs.
“Public broadcasting is important in delivering current affairs, sport and entertainment to homes across Ireland.
“It is essential that RTÉ promote diverse programming if it wishes to remain fresh into the future.
“Therefore, it is essential that RTÉ fosters and develops new talent.
“A major role of the BAI should be in tackling media dominance that is currently being witnessed in Ireland.
“A large section of the media controlled in the hands of a private individual is not a free press.
“Media mergers are an area which the BAI must independently scrutinise as it is their responsibility that diversity remains on our airwaves.
“I welcome that the BAI have published a Strategy on Broadcasting which will set out a roadmap for broadcasting for the coming years.”
