Adams slams Taoiseach over railroading of terms of Guerin inquiry
Speaking from outside the Dáil alongside other opposition leaders today, Sinn Féin leader and TD for Louth Gerry Adams slammed the Taoiseach for railroading through the Dáil without debate, the terms of reference for the inquiry based upon the Guerin report into Garda malpractice.
This came after Adams had called upon the opposition to withdraw from Dáil proceedings due to government intransigence.
Deputy Adams said:
“It is immensely serious that the Oireachtas has not been able to debate the terms of reference for this inquiry.
“In raising the question of why the Taoiseach cancelled the debate, I gave him ample opportunity to push it back to a later time.
“My initial question asked if the Taoiseach received any correspondence from former Minister Shatter on the matter. He failed to answer but when I pressed him he revealed that he had letters and that letters had been received as far back as last November. That is totally and utterly unacceptable.
“The actions of the Taoiseach in the Dáil today were a complete farce and that’s why I called upon the Opposition to withdraw.
“He persisted in a bull headed way and used his majority to push this through without debate. He needs to explain why. He also needs to provide all Teachta Dála with all the correspondence on this case.”
