Farmers must heed slurry dangers protocols
Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Oliver McMullan has said that farmers must do more to protect themselves from danger while mixing slurry.
Speaking after it was revealed only one in four farmers took the proper precautions while mixing slurry Mr McMullan said:
“Unfortunately the dangers associated with slurry are well known with several fatalities over the past few years.
“So I am surprised that many farmers are ignoring safety guidelines when mixing slurry.
“Farming is still one of the most dangerous industries to be involved in.
The department and HSENI have been working hard to improve safety but this will only happen if farmers take the proper precautions while carrying out their duties.
“I would urge farmers to work to the guidelines set down by the Department of Agriculture and HSENI and wait at least half an hour before entering a building containing freshly mixed slurry.” Ends/Críoch
