Fearon calls on DUP to apologise over Travellers remarks

3 February, 2015 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has called on the DUP to apologise for offensive remarks made about the Travelling community in the Assembly.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said;

"During a debate on the provision of accommodation, DUP MLA Trevor Clarke referred to the rights of what he termed as 'ordinary individuals.'

"The clear implication of his remarks was that Travellers are somehow different to so-called 'ordinary people', which is highly offensive.

"I immediately challenged the MLA's party colleague and minister for social development, Mervyn Storey to distance himself from these derogatory remarks but he declined to do so.

"Trevor Clarke needs to apologise for his comments and Mervyn Storey must also explain why, as an Executive minister, he failed to distance himself from these offensive remarks about a section of our society.

"The Travelling community are an integral part of our society and Sinn Féin is committed to ensuring its rights are protected and respected."
